Wax has 'memory'. Your first burn sets the pattern for every burn after. Three habits prevent tunneling entirely: 1) On the first lighting, burn 2-3 hours, until the melt pool reaches the edge of the glass. 2) Trim the wick to 1/4 inch before every burn for an even flame. 3) Give each burn time to reach the edges, away from drafts and fans.
